Anti-abortion feminist group shows splinter group
Some women's take on abortion access is that it is part of the patriarchy
Another interesting tidbit I found during my research trip dealt with an antiabortion women’s group.
Feminists for Life began in 1974 with a message that women would be empowered through outlawing abortion. That platform put it at odds with other major feminist groups like the National Organization for Women.
Even now, on our facebook page, we see some women say that legal abortion advances the patriarchy. The argument is flawed, as a woman’s ability to control her fertility provides her with a great deal of power within gender dynamics.
While most pro-choice activists would disagree fundamentally with antiabortion feminists, there is a belief on both sides that government should do more to address the causes of abortion—namely that of financial distress or challenges. Feminists on both sides of the debate argued for subsidized daycare. But in other issues, it’s taken radical stances including not permitting abortion in cases in which a woman got pregnant after she was raped.
