California AG sues CPC Companies over false advertising
Complaint criticizes the companies for marketing abortion pill reversal
Last week, California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a complaint against a company running several crisis pregnancy centers because they contended it was guilty of false advertising.
Jefferson Public Radio reported that Heartbeat International, a national anti-abortion group, and RealOptions Obria, a chain that operates five crisis pregnancy centers in Northern California, both promote services to “reverse” the medication abortion process. Bonta is suing both groups in Alameda Superior Court under the state’s False Advertising and Unfair Competition laws.
The complaint indicates that Instead of offering vulnerable pregnant people accurate information, Defendants Heartbeat International, Inc. (“HBI”) and RealOptions provide them with false and misleading statements.
They claim that there is a way to “reverse” the effects of mifepristone, which they call “abortion pill reversal” or “APR.” They falsely claim that through APR “thousands of lives” have been “saved.”5 But, there is no evidence showing that mifepristone can be “reversed” or that the APR “protocol” contributes to the continuation of a pregnancy.
Abortion pill reversal involves using progesterone after an abortion provider prescribes mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-pill abortion regimen. The science is questionable, its effectiveness in doubt, and the medical ethics of reversing abortions are highly debated.
I've included the complaint here.
