New research poll indicates widespread support for abortion access
Residents of restrictive states want loosened abortion laws
A new survey indicated that residents of states with restrictive abortion laws think by and large that access to the procedure should be easier to come by.
The poll, conducted by Pew Research Center, included responses from 5,079 adults tallied between March 27 and April 2. The organization published the results on Wednesday. About four in 10 Americans think it would be difficult to get an abortion near them.
In states like Mississippi and Alabama, or anywhere with restrictive laws, seven in 10 thought it would be hard to get an abortion.
The poll also showed that most Americans thought it should be easier to get reproductive care. Consistently, six in 10 of those polled thought abortion should be legal.
Along party lines, 84 percent of Democrats and 40 percent of Republicans say abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
Young people are the biggest supporters of abortion rights, with 73 percent of individuals between the ages of 18 and 29 supporting legal abortion.
The majority of both men and women think that abortion should be legal. Sixty-four percent of women agree and 60 percent of men believe so as well.
