Presidential Roundup: What the candidates are saying about abortion
The first primary contest is a little more than a month away
The presidential race continues to swirl around the abortion issue. A major magazine covered former President Donald Trump's stances on reproductive rights. A fringe Democratic candidate for president has started running antiabortion ads criticizing President Joe Biden. Here’s a roundup:
Rolling Stone recently published an article in which it relayed that Donald Trump’s campaign believes that he can portray himself as a moderate on abortion rights. Journalist Tessa Stuart reports that Trump thinks the Republican base will fall in line once he gets the nomination. When Trump was in office, he supported a 20-week ban. He reinstated the global gag rule and stripped Planned Parenthood of funding. He is also running ads in Iowa claiming he is the most pro-life president ever. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized him publicly for saying it on Twitter.
Former NJ Gov. Chris Christie said that he would not sign a six-week abortion ban if he were elected president. He again reiterated that he thinks it’s a matter best left to the states and that there was no national consensus on the topic.
On the Democratic side, an antiabortion candidate running for the nomination criticized President Joe Biden for his stances. Fox News reported that Terrisa Bukovinac joined the race to run ads against the president. She said she found 115 fetal remains in a medical waste box. Bukovinac is a former founder of Pro-Life San Francisco and Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising (PAAU) and president of Democrats for Life of America.
