San Francisco event will raise funds for early abortion education
Beyond the A Word will feature several speakers telling abortion stories
A fundraiser later this month in San Francisco will help education in early abortion methods.
Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Healthcare (TEACH), a group that trains clinicians in reproductive health and enables them to provide abortion care, will host Beyond the A Word: Reproductive Life Stories at the Brava Theater on Aug. 26 at 5 p.m.
Flor Hunt, executive director for TEACH, explained the appeal of the event and the meaningful purpose behind it.
“The way it works is that there are several stories that are being told and are usually seven minutes long or so,” Hunt said. “And we have seven storytellers who will be telling stories this year.
This event will feature our silent auction with over 100 donations that will go directly to supporting TEACH’s training capacity. Beyond the A Word will showcase a range of stories that illustrate the intersectionality of our reproductive lives, all while crushing abortion stigma and celebrating abortion providers, according to a news release.
One of the speakers will be an abortion provider. The others have some abortion stories that they want to share.
Their goal this year is to raise $18,000 with ticket sales. They raised $20,000 last year. They also hold a silent auction that will raise another around $32,000 if things go well, like in 2022.
Hunt said people’s expectations for the event might differ from what they will experience.
You come out of there with catharsis,” Hunt said. “You've laughed. You cried. You've moved through every possible emotion and they really are this incredible, life-affirming experience to live through the journey that their storytelling takes you on.”
